1. INTRODUCTION TO FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS USING THE ABAQUS SOFTWARE

Objective:

A comprehensive introduction to finite element analysis using the ABAQUS software.


Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will have an understanding of the finite element analysis method, and static linear vs. nonlinear analysis.
  • Participants will be able to solve linear and nonlinear 2D and 3D problems using the ABAQUS environment.
  • Participants will be able to apply constraints and model simple contact using the ABAQUS environment.
  • Participants will be able to create, submit, monitor, and view the results of different models

Course Structure:

The course is divided into various online lessons administered through zoom. Each lesson is comprised of:

  • An introductory online lecture
  • Live or recorded demonstration
  • Online workshop with one-on-one training administered by the instructor.

In the workshop, the participants will gain hands-on experience on the various topics covered in the introduction and the live demonstration.


Topics Covered:

  • What is Finite Element Analysis?
  • Material models: linear elasticity and metal plasticity.
  • Static vs. Dynamic Analysis
  • Linear vs. Nonlinear Analysis
  • Loads and constraints
  • The finite element displacement approximation and its relation to the type of elements
  • ABAQUS CAE environment (CAD)
  • Mesh generation techniques
  • Creating, submitting and monitoring analysis jobs
  • Viewing simulation results

Course Outline:

Day 1:

Lesson 1: What is Finite Element Analysis? (0.5 hour)
Lesson 2: Introduction to the ABAQUS Environment. Solving a 2D cantilever beam and comparing with hand calculations. (2 hours)
Lesson 3: Mesh convergence. Difference between reduced integration vs. full integration elements (2 hours)
Lesson 4: Stress concentrations and mesh convergence. (1 hour)


Day 2:

Lesson 5: Linear Elastic vs. Plastic material properties (1 hour)
Lesson 6: Multi-step analysis (1 hour)
Lesson 7: Linear vs. nonlinear analysis (1 hour)
Lesson 8: Constraints (1 hour)
Lesson 9: Contact (1 hour)

2. FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS USING THE ABAQUS SOFTWARE FOR PIPELINE APPLICATIONS

Objective:

This course provides an in-depth training on using the finite element analysis for pipeline applications.


Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will learn the difference between beam, shell, and solid elements.
  • Participants will be able to model a network of pipelines using beam elements.
  • Participants will be able to model dents in pipelines.
  • Participants will be able to model buckling of pipelines.
  • Participants will be able to utilize XFEM to model crack propagation in pipelines.
  • Participants will be able to create simple macros and scripts for automating finite element analysis runs using ABAQUS

Course Structure:

Pre-requisites: Introduction to Finite Element Analysis Using the ABAQUS Software, or any prior FEA exposure
